Jacoba Fransisca Maria "Cobie" Smulders was born on April 3rd, 1982, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Initially, Cobie Smulders' career ambitions were in medicine and marine biology, but acting became one of her favorite pastimes once she started appearing in school productions at Lord Byng Secondary School. She also kept herself busy in sports by regularly playing tennis and soccer.

The role has been the subject of high speculation since Samuel L. Jackson gave it up in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that he would be reading as Nick Fury alongside five actresses vying for an unidentified female sidekick role. That audition happened yesterday. Reports had V’s Morena Baccarin, Jessica Lucas and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as other candidates. Smulders wasn’t completely unknown to Whedon. In fact, he liked her as a candidate for Wonder Woman when he was working on that superhero film. Deadline has learned that the role is Maria Hill, who in the comics was the ruthless interim executive director of SHIELD, who was not above blackmailing and bullying superheros to get her way. She was eventually supplanted in that top job by Tony Stark aka Iron Man. As with all Marvel movies, the deal comes with a pile of options for appearances in future superhero films. She’s repped by UTA and Roar. Marvel Studios starts production in April, which presumably falls into Smulders’ TV hiatus on the CBS sitcom.

Robert Downey Jr brings his Iron Man character, Jeremy Renner is Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson is Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth is Thor, Mark Ruffalo is Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and Chris Evans is Captain America. Tom Hiddleston is Loki and Clark Gregg reprises the role of SHIELD agent Phil Coulson that he played in the last Iron Man.

On Thursday, Samuel L. Jackson set the Internet atwitter when he casually revealed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon that he would get a female sidekick in Joss Whedon’s upcoming Avengers film. And though we tapped into our comic book minds and guessed the mysterious sidekick could be Sharon Carter, the Wasp, or the Contessa, it looks like we may have to admit defeat: EW has confirmed that How I Met Your Mother‘s Cobie Smulders is the frontrunner to appear in the film… as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Maria Hill.

Of course, this news is just a tad disappointing — though many fans spent the better part of the week on the edge of their seats, waiting to find out whether or not Smulders (or the other actresses rumored to join the cast) would play the Wasp, it’s a bit of a let-down to discover the role in question is Hill. That’s not to say, however, that Whedon won’t go in an interesting direction with the character: There’s a good chance she could be painted as an antagonistic presence, since after taking over S.H.I.E.L.D. from Nick Fury, Hill opposed the formation of the Avengers. But there’s at least one thing we can expect: Plenty of personality from the bad-ass Hill.

Which is why Smulders would be perfect — it’s about time she’s given a chance to bring her big personality to the big screen in a big-budget flick. (Why should Jason Segel have all the fun?) And she’s exactly the kind of actress who will work well with Whedon, a director who loves hot, smart, butt-kicking women: Not only is Smulders a babe who would no doubt look bangin’ in spandex, but the actress also boasts comedic skills that would fit well alongside the likes of Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. (And that’s the sexiest thing of all.)
