KATE WALSH: I had the idea a long time ago, after a breakup. I didn’t miss him so much as I missed the scent of a man on my skin, or the scent of his skin on his shirt. The idea wouldn’t leave me alone. I kept hearing slogans in my mind, like “Who doesn’t want a boyfriend in a bottle?” or “My mother loves my boyfriend.” I didn’t want to do a celebrity fragrance, and I’d done endorsements before. So I waited a few years. When I couldn’t find that scent I was looking for, I decided to create an homage to the boyfriend and finance it myself, start my own company. It’s a nod to boyfriends, who are less celebrated than spouses but still have important roles to play.

KATE WALSH: There is a pheromone thing that happens. They’re powerful. We’re animals, when it comes down to it. It’s what saves us from being computers.

KATE WALSH: My grandmother gave me a violet eau de toilette in a beautiful bottle wrapped with a purple ribbon. It was like opening a jewelry box. I remember as a girl snooping in bedrooms and sniffing perfume bottles. They’re treasures for girls. That’s why I made it a custom bottle, like a Chanel bottle with a modern edge. Women like having pretty things. It’s accessible luxury.

KATE WALSH: I had in mind my first visit to Europe when I was 20. Everyone looks good there. I thought, You shouldn’t have to be rich to look or smell good. So to get to that point I had a lot of help from the people at Givaudan perfumery just outside New York City. I learned the different olfactory categories and the lingo of top notes and base notes. I would bring in a candle as an example of what I liked, and they would help me articulate scent in the language of perfumery.

KATE WALSH: I love doing movies because they’re finite—it’s 90 minutes instead of seven years. On TV, great writers keep it interesting, but doing films or plays allows me to explore other stuff. It’s a catch-22 when your television show or character becomes a success—it gives you the opportunity to dig deep into a character, but you’re also playing that one character for years.

KATE WALSH: Addison is a fashionista. Linda Bass styles her on the show. She brought back the WASPy, classic pieces. She dresses a little more conservatively than I do, but I do love fashion. It plays a pretty big role in my life. I was thinking about that recently, looking at my closet. I have lots of shoes—it’s almost ridiculous. It all started when I got on one bad-dressed list years ago. I was in New York, and I didn’t have any time to shop between filming and doing press. And then that happened, so I hired a stylist. It’s another art form; it’s fun, another way to express yourself.

KATE WALSH: I am obsessed with Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney. Marant is so wearable day to night. Addison wears a lot of Max Mara on the show. That brand always feels like it’s made for me. And Dolce & Gabbana for the simple structure. For shoes, I love Brian Atwood platform pumps and Céline sandals. Oh, and I can’t forget Marant’s fierce shoes.

KATE WALSH: Rome. The light there is straight off a movie set. It’s so cosmopolitan, and the people are both cosmopolitan and warm. I had a torrid affair in Rome after Under the Tuscan Sun filmed. I can’t tell you with whom, but it was torrid and fantastic! I hadn’t even planned to be in Rome. I had just bought my first house and thought I’d never travel again. I saw Roman Holiday one night, thinking that was as close to Rome as I would get for a while. The next day my agent called about the part in Tuscan Sun. She said they planned to shoot Rome for San Francisco. I said, I’m there!

KATE WALSH: After playing Cathy Buxton in the "Stakeout" episode of Homicide: Life on the Street in 1996, her first major television appearance was in 1997, when she appeared on The Drew Carey Show as Carey's character's girlfriend Nicki. She wore a fatsuit in some episodes of the show, as the Nicki character was a formerly obese woman who lost weight and slowly started to gain it back. She went on to portray Carol Nelson in HBO's The Mind of the Married Man television series, and played Norm Macdonald's romantic interest in the sitcom The Norm Show. Walsh also made a notable guest appearance on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as Mimosa, a transsexual. She sometimes appeared in sketches on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. She had a recurring role on Karen Sisco as Detective Marley Novak in 2003 and 2004. In 2005, she was cast in the ABC series, Grey's Anatomy, as Dr. Addison Montgomery, the estranged spouse of Derek Shepherd ("Dr. McDreamy", played by Patrick Dempsey).

KATE WALSH: Kate Walsh made an appearance on "Extra" TV at the Grove in Los Angeles yesterday. It looks like she was promoting her perfume (give it a try. It's lovely). I love the color of her Isabel Marant dress, but this stretch skintight crochet material tends to look cheap on most women who actually have the figure to fill it up. These dresses tend to look better on mannequins who don't move, because as soon as you see the stretching all elegance is lost. A shame, really, because Kate Walsh has what it takes to be a trend setter.

KATE WALSH: Featured in November's InStyle magazine, there is something about Kate Walsh's home that really intrigued me. It's not totally my style, but I love elements here and there. Kate (should I call her that? Sure, why not?) loved her character's bedroom on Private Practice so much that she recruited the set decorator, Melissa Levander, to decorate and furnish this house. I'm particurally drawn to the bedroom (it's the tiny picture on the top left, sorry about that). I love the warm neutrals and the midcentury yet sort of modern vibe and lots of textures that are pleasant.

KATE WALSH: “Yes and no. I’m like her in the sense that I think I’m ambitious and strong and maybe a little willful. I enjoy fashion and ladies’ shoes but I’m clearly not a doctor and I’m fallible but I don’t think in the same way that Addison is.”

KATE WALSH: “I love the immediacy of television … I love features because there’s a beginning, middle and an end, and the same with doing a full play. There’s nothing like doing theater because you feel like a bit of a rock star - you’re in front of a live audience and you have, hopefully, their undivided attention for a couple of hours.”

KATE WALSH: Kate Walsh is such a lovely lady, incredibly friendly, chatty and business minded. It was a great privilege to interview Kate for Life & Style magazine's November issue. I was keen to find out how everything is going with her showbiz job co-presenting Live From Studio Five with Jayne Middlemiss and more about her time on the apprentice. Lord Alan Sugar does sound like quite a challenging character to work with, but a lot of people do admire his blunt and very direct approach. It was also interesting to learn that in Kate's school days a former teacher actually recommended that she take up a career in TV presenting. Whilst Kate's showbiz career wasn't quite the one she planned, she is enjoying every minute! With Kate's warm persona, natural beauty and business sense, I am in no doubt she will be lighting up our screens for a long time to come.
